If you are interested in any of the following tasks please see this invaluable resource for info and ideas: https://mbharris.co.uk/articles/barncamp-a-diy-skillsharing-event/#getting-things-going

Please enter more tasks below as you think of them.

Feel free to start a wiki page for each task and break it down into subtasks - some of them are very big!

For tasks that involve making decisions, obviously very small decisions can be made by individuals or working groups but for larger ones the task involves enabling the wider group to come to a consensus

Registration Process

  • Task: Provide a method for people to sign up for the event online.
  • Previous method(s): website https://barncamp.org.uk/
  • Volunteers:
  • Comments:

When booking is complete (final deadline usually a few days before camp starts), the data from the sign-up website needs to be exported and imported into a laptop for use on the sign-in desk. This laptop has previously been running a [bespoke software]

    • engage arrivals with how the event operates
    • check people have paid
    • comms hotseat
    • hold first-aid kit
    • answering questions and telling people who they need to talk to
  • Previous methods: all details from last run on this page
  • Volunteers: Mark (+small team, please add your name here)
  • Comments: note equipment requirements

Publicity

  • Task: Publicise the event.
  • Previous method(s): Facebook, other activist sites, Indymedia, leafleting & stall at anarchist bookfair & other events, social spaces & art spaces
  • Volunteers:
  • Comments:

Update Wiki

  • Task: bring the info on the Wiki up to date
  • Volunteers:
  • Comments:

Food

  • Task: ensure food is provided for the requisite number of people
  • Previous methods: I think food was provided one year by Highbury Farm and one year by a different catering company. Food was free/included in ticket
  • Volunteers:
  • Comments:

Booze

  • Task: Provide booze
  • Previous methods: Barrels of cider and beer were acquired and sold per pint/half in plastic glasses. Volunteers did the serving & took money. A till was brought on site, not sure where from.
  • Volunteers:
  • Comments:

Toilets

  • Task: provide eco loos including private peeing place(s)
  • Previous methods: Provided by Highbury Farm
  • Volunteers:
  • Comments:

Fire pits

  • Task: Decide where to put fire pit and ensure wood is available
  • Previous methods: Woodsy did it all, I think?
  • Volunteers:
  • Comments: requirement for firewood needs to be part of the deal we make with the farm

Structures

  • Task: Provide structures for workshop spaces
  • Previous methods: People brought OARC marquee and a party tent, and ordered a lot of straw bales via the farm.
  • Volunteers
  • Comments: Last time there were no seats when we turned up so we had to do a costly last-minute deal with a chair-hire guy - we need to be super-certain that the farm have access to a suitable number of safe seats well in advance

Setting up before the event

  • Task: turning up early to help set up
  • Volunteers
  • Comments

Driving

  • Task: Driving stuff around in vans
  • Volunteers
  • Comments

Network

  • Task: Providing equipment and skills to set up on site network
  • Volunteers
  • Comments

Programme

  • Task: Planning (however loosely) the programme and enabling people to submit talk/workshop proposals
  • Previous methods: A few hour-long slots per day in each space dedicated to talks/workshops. Proposals were sent in on the mailing list and I think they were all accepted. Some time was also set aside for short talks, which were proposed at the time
  • Volunteers
  • Comments

Roles

  • Task: Decide what roles will be required at the event and have a plan for them to be filled
  • Previous methods: IIRC there was a Production Manager each day, for general co-ordination, and also a manager of each space, ensuring that things started on time and that workshops etc had the equipment they needed. Also welcomers at the desk ... probably more
  • Volunteers: Naomi
  • Comments: I think it might be worth having more than one person in a welfare/conflict resolution type role. Not sure if this has been a role before. Obviously hope won't be needed but worth assigning just in case.

Entertainment

  • Task: organise music, performances, fun things
  • Previous methods: Open mic, Raveoke, shamanic laptop healing (??)
  • Volunteers:
  • Comments:
