Show our new international event calendar https://radar.squat.net We can explain how it works, how to add new groups and events etc. but we can also see together with some people what can be improved to make it even more usable and useful.

Rendering OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap - https://openstreetmap.org - is a great to add lots of places that are relevant to activists, but in the default rendering not all of that shows up (such as squats), or is bundled together (such as bike shops, bike workshops and bike diy repair places) I would like to discuss, list, draw up on paper what would be relevant for an activist rendering of OpenStreetMap data. We can also see how it would look like online by making some Mapbox maps. That part then would also double as a hands-on workshop on how to use Mapbox to make your own maps.

Almost every mapping initiative is mapping in non-connected layers – we have collected here around 200 maps connected to ideas of socio-ecological transformation. That is, for each field (e.g. urban gardening) we have scores of maps that are developed in parallel, in each region anew, based on different taxonomies TransforMap is a collaborative answer to this challenge and its complexities. It aims to co-develop with users (common citizens as well as representatives of the different movements) the necessary tools and standards for free and open crowd mapping that allows for aggregating all those mapping initiatives in one map. Approaches: Open Street Map editing, Linked open data, Semantic web

Your blog and on-line communities with Wordpress Networks

The idea of this workshop is to look at running your own blog running Wordpress' software whilst avoiding corporate providers, such as Wordpress.com. The workshop will have a special focus on a network of Wordpress sites, such as Network23.org, and how to build a community around this. We'll look at the differences between Wordpress.com, the commercial company, and Wordpress.org, the open source software; how to register your domain and set it up; an overview of managing your blog, with a focus on audio, video and networking tools; and finally a discussion and proposals for how to build a better community.

The workshop will be based around both a local install of multisite Wordpress so that people can create and play with their own blogs, as well as the online Network23.org service, where people are invited to bring their own domains with them to see how to link their web site address up to their blog. We'll use the FLOSS Manual pages for Wordpress and have some networked computers available to use.

Re-using computers in our communities

Many of us have experiences of re-using equipment in ways that challenges ecocidal consumerism. But what are the limits to this? Just how old does a machine have to be before you give up, and when does it make sense to buy new low-power kit? These and many more questions will be up for discussion. Participants are invited to talk about a re-use case they've been involved with recently.

The code for the custom CMS which runs the site is released under the The GNU Affero General Public License. Basic Electronics - going from the physical world to the digital world (and back again)

I'd like to introduce people to some basic principles of digital and analogue electronics through the use of sensors, raspberry pi's / arduino's and actuators. We'll be using a range of sensors to find out things about the real world, process them with some low cost computing and then making something happen back in the real world (flashing lights, moving things with motors etc).

I'll be providing a wide range of sensors - everything from temperature to light levels to pulse rates. Please bring your own pi's or arduino's if you have them - I've got a few but probably not enough for everyone.

Efficient wood stoves

A look at different types of stoves with a particular focus on stoves that produce biochar. There will be a demonstration of stoves and discussion and kettle boiling - bring a tea mug.

Self Defence / Violence Awareness workshop

I can talk about the psychology of aggression and violence, avoiding escalating situations and teach some basic self defence techniques (for example escaping from people grabbing your wrists, hair). These are techniques derived from jiu-jitsu.

Privacy and the Dark Side of the Net - talk

In light of the revalations by Edward Snowden in 2013, what's the state of play with our privacy? Should we be concerned? What are we hiding and who are we hiding from? Are we better off on activist run services or in the commercial domain?
